The B2B sales pitch: structure, three formats and the data that makes it land

What is a sales pitch and how it transforms your outreach

The short answer

A B2B sales pitch is a short, structured argument that connects one problem the buyer has to one outcome you produce, with proof, and ends in a concrete next step. It is not a product description, and it is not delivered to everyone: the same pitch lands or fails depending on whether the company has a reason to listen right now. The structure is four parts, hook and problem, solution and value, proof, ask, and it adapts to three formats: the thirty-second elevator pitch, the cold email under 150 words, and the discovery-call pitch that is asked as questions rather than stated. What makes it land in the Benelux is the reason you open with, and that reason comes from data: a vacancy, a move, a filing, a visit to your site. This page sits under the B2B sales funnel between the conversation and the proposal.

What a sales pitch is in modern B2B

The old pitch was a monologue: who we are, what we do, why we are the best. The modern one is a narrative in the buyer's terms: here is what is changing for you, here is what that costs, here is what companies like you did about it, here is the next step. The difference is not eloquence; it is context. A pitch delivered to a company that just hired three sales managers, and that names that fact, is a different event from the same words sent to a list.

That is also why the pitch is the wrong place to start. Teams that polish scripts and dial numbers that lead nowhere are working on delivery when the problem is selection. Fix who you talk to and why now, and an average pitch outperforms a brilliant one sent blind.

The four components

The hook and the problem. Skip the company introduction. Open with something you noticed about them and the problem it usually brings: "You have three sales vacancies open; teams at that stage usually find that the data in the CRM is not good enough for the new people to work from." Specific problems create recognition; generic statements about efficiency create nothing.

The solution and the value. Bridge from their problem to the outcome, not to the feature list. Not "we have 54 filters and an AI agent", but "you would know which Belgian companies fit you and are moving right now, without a rep spending Mondays on research". Frame it in their situation: expanding to Germany means register data there; a new sales lead means a clean list on day one.

Proof. One example of a similar company, with a number if you have one, carries more than a page of features. Choose the proof that mirrors their sector and stage. If you do not have a matching example, say what you can show them in a trial instead.

The ask. A specific, low-friction next step: a time, a duration, a purpose. "Would Thursday at ten work for twenty minutes to show it on your own market?" beats "would you like to learn more?" every time.

Three formats, one message

The elevator pitch. Thirty seconds, no pleasantries: problem, solution, proof, ask. "Belgian sales teams lose hours a week finding companies and still miss the ones without a website. We build the list from the company register and tell you who is hiring or moving. One HR consultancy we work with runs its whole outbound from that list. Can I show you on your own territory?"

The cold email pitch. The subject line decides whether it is opened, the length decides whether it is answered. Under 150 words, one problem, one solution, one ask. Reference the reason for writing in the first line. Cold emails that get more replies has the numbers; the legal side is in is B2B cold outreach legal in Europe?

The discovery-call pitch. On a discovery call you pitch through questions, not statements. Confirm your research ("I saw you opened an office in Ghent, is that right?"), listen, and adapt: if they raise compliance, go there; if they raise speed, go there. The B2B sales conversation has the eight questions.

Why the reason matters more than the words

Static data tells you what a company looks like. Signals tell you what it is doing now, and a pitch built on a signal has a reason to exist. The signals that work in Belgium and the Netherlands are the ones you can verify: a vacancy on the company's site or at VDAB, a new establishment unit in the register, a change of director, a filing that shows a jump in headcount, a visit to your pricing page. Finding Belgian companies that are hiring and who is visiting my website? cover the two most usable. A funding round or an expansion announcement is a reason too, but rarer among SMEs, so build the pitch on what the register and the website give you every week rather than on news that comes once a year.

Frequently asked questions

What is a sales pitch? A short, structured argument that connects one problem the buyer has to one outcome you produce, backed by proof and ending in a specific next step. In modern B2B it opens with a reason that applies to that company now.

How long should a B2B sales pitch be? Thirty seconds spoken, under 150 words written, and on a discovery call it is not a block at all but a set of questions. If the buyer is not talking within a minute, it is too long.

What is the difference between a sales pitch and an elevator pitch? The elevator pitch is the thirty-second spoken version of the same four components: problem, solution, proof, ask. The sales pitch is the structure; the elevator pitch is one of its formats.

Should I pitch on the first cold call? Only after the first two questions: permission and the reason you called. The cold call exists to qualify and book a meeting; the pitch proper belongs on the discovery call, delivered as questions.

What makes a pitch work in Belgium? A verifiable reason from the register or the company's own site, and an example the buyer recognises. Most Belgian SMEs are barely on LinkedIn, so the signal has to come from the register, a vacancy or a visit, not from social activity.
